A Day In The Life — Malta

Hello Friend,

We have just past the two week mark in our latest Malta excursion. Luckily for us, we have still got another two weeks left here. I hope that Maltese Nana isn’t getting too sick of us yet, bless her. She is enjoying the fact I can bring all her ornaments down for cleaning from the top of the cabinets. Next job is to clean the windows for her. Ohhhh and then the roof fan. The list goes on…

So, apart from cleaning everything in Nana’s house, what does the average day in Malta look like? Here is what a typical day usually looks like :

07:30–08:00 Wake up

Usually I have the alarm set for either 07:00–07:30, but, I’ll admit, I tend to lie in bed for about 15–20 minutes after the alarm first goes off. It’s hard not to stay in bed for slightly longer when you’re sleeping in the worlds darkest, most comfiest bedroom.

08:00–8:15 Morning cup of tea with Nana

Every morning, we sit down and have a cup of tea with Nana. The morning wouldn’t be complete without her usual, seemingly aggressive, Maltese chuntering! Even though she sounds like she is shouting, Jennie assures me that she isn’t, it’s just the way the Maltese speak!

08:15–09:15 Morning Reading and Coffee

There are some things what never change no matter where I am or what I’m doing; and that is morning reading and coffee. For me, it’s one of them rituals which will always stay with me. The Morning isn’t the same without it. I’m currently reading Stillness is the Key by Ryan Holiday (book review will soon be available in my Library).

09:15–10:15 Plan The Day Ahead, Meditation and Get Ready!

When you’re staying somewhere for a month, you can pretty much do whatever you want whenever you want. There isn’t so much need to plan several days ahead, we normally just end up doing whatever we feel like doing on that particular day.

During this period, we usually meditate for 20 minutes too. If we don’t meditate in the morning, we do it in the evening.

10:30 -12 Break The Morning Fast/Go To The Gym

Apart from the first few days here, I have been fasting in the mornings. If I didn’t restrict my eating here, I would end up being a very chubby young man. The portion sizes here in Malta are outrageous! No wonder it’s the fattest nation in Europe! We go to the gym three/four times a week too to try maintain some shape and strength.

12:00–18:00 Exploring/Mooching/Chilling Somewhere For The Day

We usually head out around early lunch time. We could be doing anything, it just depends on the day. No two days are the same. One day we could be taking a long hike along the coastline, another day spending time with Jennie’s family, or the next visiting some of Malta’s most famous landmarks. Ohhh I do love it here! I always grab a snack or two whilst we are out too, usually a pastizzi (Maltese traditional pastry) or an ice cream if we are by the seaside, how could I not!

Coastal Walks

18:00–19:00 Indulge In Some Of Nanas Legendary Cooking

We usually head back for dinner time depending whether or not Nana fancies cooking or not. If she does, we are usually in for a treat. Some Nana classics include traditional dishes like spaghetti and fenek (rabbit), Ross Il-forn (oven baked rice) or Maltese style chicken and potatoes.

19:00–22:00 Reading, Writing and Journaling

The days tends to end in a similar fashion to how it started, with some more reading and researching. I usually write these posts in the evening as well, it’s just the most convenient time to do some writing since we are so busy throughout the day. I have been saving my journalling till the evening too. In my journal I reflect on what’s gone well, what hasn’t gone well, how I have been feeling etc.

22:00–22:30 Hit the hay

After the giza (the water heater) has fired up, I’ll grab a quick shower and then hit the hay, ready to repeat it all again tomorrow!

What does your daily life usually look like?

See you next time,

Tom
